Beaux-Arts Classicism

One major style of architecture in America during the period from 1890- 1915 was that of Beaux-Arts Classicism. Established by the Ecole des beaux-arts in Paris, in this style of Classicism paired columns are a distinguishing feature, along with massive flights of stairs. Both arches and linteled openings (rectangular spaces formed by the gap between vertical columns or pilasters and horizontal elements) occur on the same level vertically. Buildings of the Beaux Arts style may be adorned with figure sculptures to a greater degree than any other of the Classical styles, and these may be placed at the skyline. There is a very symmetric arrangement of the buildings and of their layout, and the facades may be divided into advancing and receding sections. Apart from attempting to blend the Classical Greek and Roman styles with certain 17th and 18th century French elements, Beaux-Arts Classicism is also typified by its pictorialism, or highly detailed elevation plan drawings.
