First
published in 1563, John Foxe's "Acts and Monuments,"better
known as the "Book of Martyrs,"offered its readers a Protestant
and millenarian history of the Church of England. Its illustrations presented
even those with poor literacy powerful images of Protestant martyrdom. It was
perhaps, after the Bible, the most important Protestant book in Britain. Churches
were required to provide a copy for their parishoners, and wills of the period
show how careful provisions were made for its transmission to future generations. |
