The Pietà:
an Introduction

Images of the Pietà, Mary, deep in mourning, holding her dead son after his crucifixion, have been one of the predominant images in Christian iconography for over 600 years. It resonates with us, regardless of our faith, because it explores two fundamental human emotions: a parent's love for a child, and the excruciating pain of loss.

This site is dedicated to the study of the Pietà, it's origins, its development as an icon, and the ramifications of it as a symbol in contemporary culture.
