Jacob Riis

It is quite obvious to see why in these examples Riis was outraged with the conditions in the city. Boys, mere children, were being forced to sleep out in the street. They look haggard, and extremely poor. None of the boys seem to be wearing any shoes, and aren't wearing clean clothes.

It is incredibly sad to see three children sleeping and apparently living on the street. Adults feel a twinge of guilt for these children because they will have a hard time getting an education and having a normal life. They need more substantial learning experiences. It's sad that three boys can't find a house to stay at for a night.

This picture features by far the youngest of the boys by Riis. These children don't look older than 7 years old, and they appear to sleeping in some kind of drainage ditch. It is unacceptable when the upper classes have ample money and there are children who won't have food, shelter, or clothes provided for them.
