Dorothea Lange
Dorothea Lange was one of the most prolific photographers of the
twentieth century for her work chronicling the plight of Americans
during the Great Depression
and during World War II. Because of
her own personal experiences in which she was
the one struggling and fighting to survive, she was able to create
a bond with the subjects of her pictures. She felt their pain, and
she wanted to help them express what was happening to them. She
knew that their problems couldn't be avoided or swept under the
carpet. They were present, and they weren't going away any time
soon.
Dorothea understood that the American public and the US government
would not understand the problems of farmers with reports filled
with meaningless words. She understood that in order for everyone
to feel the pain and suffering of others, they would have to witness
the migrant workers, families, and the faces of the Japanese Americans
as they suffered and fought for themselves.
