The Open Road

Normally, the open road signifies freedom and choice for many of its travelers. However, I can only imagine how intimidating and terrifying the above image looked to the men, women, and children of the migrant families heading west looking for a place to live. They had been forced out of their own farms by drought, floods, sand storms, or poverty. Lange understands this feeling of emptiness, of the unknowing in this image. Her image represents the fear of all of those who didn't have a choice, who were being forced down this long and arduous journey.
