Natacha Villamia Sochat

I create objects that store, and Reconstruct Experience
E-mail: natacha@earthlink.net

I created this site as an art history project while in my last semester at Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Art Boston, Graduate MFA program.

I am an artist, philosopher, biologist, and healer (physician). I have studied cultural/critical theory from its origins and know that it is deeply problematic for me as a biologist. I have experienced a culture of comformity in the academic art world with its hegemonic embodient of cultural theory. I view Derrida's anti-foundationalist rhetoric to be provincial and not the radical idea that it is purported to have been. Many decades before Derrida's claim, anyone knowldgeable of the sciences was aware that there is no secure foundation for knowledge. I also view Derrida's deconstruction as an offshoot of Cartesian analysis. I believe the time is long overdue to critique 'critical theory' rather than conformingly nod our heads in 'pseudo-intellectual' posturing.

As a group, artists have not critically thought about the implications of the meaning of purely 'conceptual' works that ironically are deeply Cartesian in their separation of Mind and Body. I do not separate the Mind/Body and as such value the use of the artists hand in making objects in the creation of Conceptual Art.

These are just ideas that that are simply stated at this time...it was not my intention in this site to go into this in great detail. But I love to plant seeds, and I am planting the few I discussed above.
