Gober's work has often been referred to as the representation of the "nasty underbelly of American life". He speaks about his works as an attempt to cleans and purify event fro childhood, thus referring to memory.

Coppola's movie was released at the height of the Watergate investigation, a stain in American history. Harry is not afraid to stick his finger in the drain, searching for evidence of an act of murder, another attempt to reveal truth, to "clean up" the mess created by an immoral act.
