Introduction

René Magritte's life was rather uneventful. Unlike other legendary artists, Magritte was leading a quiet and happy life, without even changing place he lived in.
His paintings are the fruits of the imagination coming to life simply by looking at landscapes, people and objects of every single day.
The outcome of this imagination resulted in creating original and whimsical visions provoking many theoreticians to grasp them from psychoanalitical or semiotic point of view - never with luck.
In my project "René Magritte's Key To Dreams" I provide an animated and interactive journey to the world of Belgian surrealist René Magritte [1898 - 1967]. I divided artist's vision creating four links:
mystery, replacing, renaming, containing.
Every one of them may be also a component of the three others.

Golconda, 1953;
The Empty Mask, 1928;
Mystery

Although the mystery is the most significant element of EVERY painting by Magritte, this part of the journey is a necessary start. It includes one painting which Magritte painted particularly with the word "mystery" in mind - "The Threatened Murderer".
To create a background I added soundtrack of Edith Piaf's song "La Vie En Rose". Of course by the time the painting was finished Edith Piaf was barely 11 years old and couldn't be known by Magritte. Nonetheless later on the French singer was one of the most important icons of the mid XX century.

The Dominion of Light, 1961;
The Threatened Murderer, 1926;
False Mirror, 1961;
Replacing

Replacing objects by literaly changing their location, function and substance was Magritte's very common way of looking at the reality.
I decided to animate some of the replacements.

Renaming

In this more interactive part of my website viewer is invited to manipulate the components of very famous painting by dragging the icons into the divided frame. The name of every object corresponds with each icon. When viewer is sure that all the objects match, everything goes not as it was planned...
