The Leonard P. Zakim and Brookyln Bridges
Both the Zakim Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge were historic in their own time. The social response to their construction was
one of wonder in the Brooklyn Bridges case and one of controversy in the Zakim Bridge case. The Zakim Bridge controversy was
over the naming of the bridge. I refer to it here as the Zakim Bridge but is it also referred to as the Bunker Hill bridge.
Zakim Intended for the man and Bunker Hill intended for the obvious historic geography which this brigde connects to.
The Brooklyn Bridge's construction cause between twenty and thirty deaths and nearly all the construction workers ended
up sufered from the bends. This project was monumental at the time andmany people who live in the region still
consider it a great monument to the city.
