History of Graffiti

Ancient Egypt

Egyptian Art

The ancient Egyptian civilization was a major contributor to the development of art. The examples shown here (created between 1000 and 1500 B.C.) demonstrate the distinctive Egyptian style.
The Egyptians depicted individual people in great detail, and used the language of hieroglyphics as a way to write things as a representation of ideas, rather than simply drawing pictures to depict the actual events. This is a definite step toward the graffiti we see around us today, in that words are often used to convey ideas, accompanied by drawings and paintings to provide further explanation.
