Modern Graffiti

1960s and 1970s

Modern Graffiti began in Philadelphia and New York City in the late 60s. “Julio 204” and “Taki 183” began “tagging” the city around this time, applying an ancient art form to the modern world, soon to be followed by hundreds of others. Throughout the 70s, graffiti flourished, especially in these cities.

“During the early to mid 1980s the graffiti art was no longer at a plateau and started to deteriorated radically due to several factors. Some of these factors were directly related to the graffiti culture itself and others to society in general. The crack cocaine epidemic was finally starting to take a toll on the inner city and due to the drug trade powerful firearms were readily available to anyone who wanted them. The climate on the street became increasingly tense and laws restricting the sale of paint to minors and requiring merchants to place spray paint in locked cages made shoplifting more difficult. Legislation was in the works to make penalties for graffiti more severe.”
