Maurice
Sendak's illustrations for Isaac Bashevis Singer's classic tales, Zlateh
the Goat (1966), show a variety of characters that are inspired by old
family photo albums.
In
Grandpa's House (1985) was written by Phillip Sendak, Maurice's father.
It is a tale within a tale about his father's life in the shtetl and his immigration
to America.
One
of Sendak's most celebrated works, Where the WIld Things Are, drew
inspiration from his family, in particular, his aunts and uncles who visited
his childhood home and pinched his cheeks and ate all the food. The book was
controversial upon its initial publication due to the theme and illustrations
of "Wild Things."
